Participate in the Spectrum Project!

Collect a freshwater sample, participate in art!

My name is Amelia Hitchcock and I'm a BFA(hons) student at Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland, New Zealand. I'm hoping to increase awareness of fresh-water ecology, by facilitating a community creation of a Spectrum of New Zealand fresh water.

New Zealand is a beautiful country, but statistics show that up to 90% of our lowland rivers are so polluted you can't swim in them. I want to get people to reconnect with our fresh water systems.

The idea is first for you to encounter your local fresh water bodies - go down to the nearest stream or lake, and collect a sample. Eventually I'd like to create a suspended wall of water in sample jars. I'd also like to use the images of the people that collected the water (if permitted).
Participation is simple:

1) Collect a small sample of freshwater (or two or three - different sources is preferable) in a small, plastic WATERTIGHT container with a lid. Get some sediment if you can. (this action is your performance as part of this artwork)
2) Write down - Where the sample was taken from, your name, and the date (these will be included as labels in documentation)
3) Email: h2ospectrum@gmail.com : I'll email you back with the postage address (or organise other methods of collection)
4) package appropriately and post :) (deadline for receiving samples is mid-late August)
5) if you're happy with your image also being used as part of the art work please also send a head and shoulders shot as a jpg to h2ospectrum@gmail.com

NOTES :
** Please do not put yourself in danger collecting samples.
** [NZ POST suggestions for Liquids:
Wrap bottles individually (If they're plastic it should be ok), surround with resilient cushioning material and place in a well sealed polyethylene bag. Pack in a strong cardboard carton with sufficient absorbent material such as newspaper or wood-shavings to soak up any
possible spillage.]
**Sending your image constitutes consent for me to use the image publicly - this will be done with respect.
Many Thanks!
Amelia
